No increase in City’s property tax revenue plan

The City of Fremont has announced the planned revenue for 2025 property taxes will remain as approved last year for the 2023-2025 Biennial Budget.

“The city remains committed to responsible financial stewardship and providing essential services to its residents. We always look for ways to do this without imposing additional tax burdens on property owners,” said Jenn Nabb, Finance Director for the City of Fremont.

For the 2023-2025 budget cycle, the Fremont City Council approved a property tax request of $6,991,940.13 for the 2025 year. The 2024 certified property taxable value for the city imposed for 2025, increased to $2,819,892,980, compared to $2,281,641,346 for the previous year, a 23.59% increase.

Fremont’s levy rate is expected to decrease; a collective result of increased property valuations and the city’s decision to maintain the 2023 revenue request. Pending final levy setting by the county, last year’s levy rate of $0.278497, would drop to $0.247951. This does not necessarily mean property owners will see a reduction in their property taxes. In 2023, the City of Fremont’s portion of the property tax levy accounted for 15.46%.

In 2023-2024, the city’s portion of the taxes for a home valued at $150,000 was $418. Due to the lower levy year over year, the revised lower levy would decrease it to $372, resulting in a savings of $46, if the house has not appreciated. If the home valuation increased by 20% to $180,000, the lower levy would result in a property tax of $446, reflecting an increase of $29.

According to the State Auditor’s website, the City of Fremont’s property tax levy is the lowest of all First-Class cities in eastern Nebraska and the fourth lowest of all First-Class cities in the state.

“Fremont residents are very concerned about increasing costs due to record inflation. As our property tax base grows, our focus will continue to be controlling our spending and maintaining our strong financial position,” Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg said. “We will work within our current two-year budget and continue to accomplish the major initiatives within the city including public safety, street repair, and adding to our great quality of life. We are proud to have one of the lowest levy rates in the State for First-Class cities. With a small town feel and big city opportunities, Fremont is in a great position to serve current residents and grow in the future.”
