FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University is excited to announce the hiring of Gerry Gdowski as the new Associate Athletic Director. Originally from Fremont, Nebraska, he returns to the area with a wealth of experience in athletics.

“We are thrilled to bring Gerry on board and welcome him and his family back to Fremont,” commented Courtney Thomsen, Midland Director of Athletics. “He brings great experience, both as a coach and business professional, and we are excited to have him join the Warrior team!”

After attending high school in Fremont, Gdowski attended the University of Nebraska where he played football for the Huskers. He was an Academic All-American and an All-Big 8 performer while serving as a team captain during his senior season.

Upon the completion of his playing career, Gdowski returned to Nebraska (1991-1994) where he began his coaching career as a football graduate assistant. That developed into an assistant coaching position with South Dakota State University (1994-1997) where he rose to the offensive coordinator role.

From there, he worked at New Mexico State University (2003-2004), Ohio University (2004-2014), Vanderbilt University (2014-2019), and the University of Memphis (2020-2021). Most recently, he has been a loan officer for a financial institution since 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I have always considered Nebraska home even from far away. My wife and I have most of our family still living in Nebraska and we are very excited to be close to them,” commented Gdowski when asked about moving back to Fremont. “I am excited to get around coaches and athletes again and be a part of the process of building and nurturing teams. I love the energy around an athletic department and watching teams compete and I am excited to be a part of that again.”

Gdowski will look to draw upon his coaching experience to mentor some of Midland’s coaches who are new to college athletics.

“I have 30 years of experience recruiting student-athletes and believe I can help with that process as well,” added Gdowski. “I understand the kind of teamwork and loyalty it takes for a team to be successful and can add something to Midland from that standpoint. I am most looking forward to watching our student-athletes compete in their prospective sports.”
