Dodge County treasurer Bargstadt to retire in May

Dodge County is looking for a new treasurer.

The board of supervisors accepted a letter Wednesday morning from county treasurer Gail Bargstadt announcing her retirement, effective at the close of business on May 3, 2024.

Chairman Bob Missel lauded Bargstadt for her service to the county.

“I appreciate the advance notice so that we can do what we need to do,” Missel said. “Your office has been (operated) very efficiently. I always say that when my phone doesn’t ring, I know that things are going well. Thank you for your service.”

Bargstadt was elected as treasurer in 2018 and re-elected in November of 2022. She thanked the board for their support during her tenure. She added that her office features a good staff.

“At this time, the office – as far as business-wise – has very capable and competent people,” she said.

Missel explained the process of filling the remainder of Bargstadt’s term.

“When an elected official – other than a county board member – steps down from their office prior to their term expiring, it falls on the county board to make an appointment to fill that unexpired term,” he said.

Missel continued that he wanted to form a committee to review procedures and move forward in seeking a replacement.

“And ultimately come back to this board with a recommendation to fill Gail’s spot,” he said.

That five-person committee includes county attorney Pam Hopkins, county clerk Micki Gilfry, county assessor Debbie Churchill and board members Doug Backens and Bob Bendig.

The county will soon be advertising in various publications seeking applicants for the position.
