Free colon cancer test kits available

three-rivers-big

Free take-home screening tests for colon cancer (FIT kits) will be distributed from noon to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:35 p.m. on Thursday (March 28) at Three Rivers Public Health Department, 2400 N Lincoln Avenue in Fremont.

The kit pickup is sponsored by Methodist Fremont Health and Three Rivers Public Health Department.

“March is Colorectal Awareness Month, and in an effort to increase awareness regarding the importance of early detection and prevention of the disease, we encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity for a free screening,” said Terra Uhing, executive director of Three Rivers. “Drive up to our west facing doors during the times specified and we will have individuals come out to your car. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to get screened.”

Take-home colorectal cancer screenings are recommended for individuals 45-74 years of age, and the individual must live in the counties of Dodge, Saunders, or Washington. Outside of the above times, individuals can come to our front desk and ask for a kit as well.

FIT kits only require one sample and do not require any diet restrictions ahead of time. They are simple, easy, and free. Postage to mail the sample is already paid for.

For more information about the kit distribution, call 402-704-2246 or email Coartney@3rphd.ne.gov.
