Bergan Catholic High School volleyball coach Sue Wewel is retiring.

Wewel started coaching the Lady Knights in 1975 and guided her team to the school’s only state championship and five runner-up finishes. In her more than 40 seasons as a head volleyball coach, Wewel led the Bergan program for 29 years and compiled a 792-381 record.

Wewel picked up several accolades over the course of her career including the 2021 Nebraska Coaches Association Phyllis Rice-Honnor Volleyball Award for her significant contributions to high school volleyball and the NSAA Volleyball 50th Year Celebration Gold
Medal Coach Award. Wewel also coached the All-Star Team for the Nebraska Coaches Association.

“We would like to thank Coach Wewel for her dedication to the student-athletes at Bergan along with decades of success that produced 792 wins on the court and strong, capable and driven young women off the court. We look forward to finding a successor to Coach Wewel
that will uphold the same values of hard work, accountability and effort that her volleyball teams exemplified for years.” Bergan President Dan Koenig said.

Wewel established a level of excellence at Bergan. The Lady Knights had made the state tournament six seasons in a row prior to losing in the district final last season.
