OMAHA, Neb. – Midland University made a short trip to Omaha, Nebraska to compete in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup against the College of Saint Mary on Wednesday night. Behind a balanced-scoring night, the Warriors secured a 78-63 win over the Flames.
The teams engaged in a lively exchange of baskets during the opening quarter. Midland used a 14-2 run that propelled them to an 18-6 lead. The Flames interrupted with an 11-2 surge of their own, narrowing the margin to 22-17 after the first quarter.
Emma Shepard started the momentum in the second quarter, sparking a second 14-2 run by Midland. The teams traded scores as the game went into the final minutes of the half, matching each other point for point. The Warriors went into the break with a comfortable 43-30 lead.
Following the intermission, Emma Shepard initiated the third quarter with a 5-0 run as Midland extended its lead. CSM responded with consecutive layups, but an 18-4 run by their guests reestablished a double-digit lead by the end of the third quarter, 43-30.
Ellie Bovaird kicked off the final ten minutes with a three-pointer before the sides returned to trading baskets. The Flames called for a timeout, and after a brief pause, they attempted to launch a comeback, going on a 20-2 run. The Warriors, who built their lead early, held on to the 78-63 road victory, their first true road win of the season.
Emma Shepard and Sarah Shepard led the team with 16 points each. Joining them in double-digits were Ellie Bovaird with 14 and Gabby Beauperthuy with 12 points.
For the game, Midland shot 33-of-63 (52.4%) while CSM was 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the field. The Flames were able to keep things close thanks in part to their ability to get to the free throw line. They went 14 of 19 (73.7%) while the Warriors were 6 of 7 (85.7%).
Midland (6-19, 3-16 GPAC) will return to its home court this weekend as it hosts Northwestern (15-10,11-8 GPAC). It will be the final home contest of the season for the Warriors. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Fremont with Senior Day taking place after.
