Carl E. Dickey, 87, of Omaha died Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, with his children by his side.
Carl was born April 17, 1936 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Harold and Alice (Becker) Dickey. He had one brother, Arthur. During his youth and into his early adult years he ran with his “pack” of friends, Gene Abdallah, Flip Fellinger, Gary Hartenhoff, Jerry Murray, Pete Page and Jerry Potter, heading off to California with them after graduation to find jobs. Carl and his “pack” remained life-long friends often speaking together on the phone and spending time with each other at reunions.
After his return to Sioux Falls from California, he met Janis Streff. Carl and Jan were married on July 15, 1961 in Salem South Dakota. Together they had four children, Jeff, Cindy, Scott and Patrick. They resided in Sioux Falls until their move to Schuyler, Nebraska, in 1973.
While Carl would tell you he wasn’t very social, he had many friends. He was well respected and loved by all those he touched. He and Jan enjoyed many activities with their friends in Schuyler.
Carl worked for Greeley Packing Company in Sioux Falls, which later became Spencer Beef and eventually Cargill Meat Solutions. Carl retired from Cargill in 1999 after having worked his way up in the company from the position of lugger into various management roles. Carl was also a member of the Air National Guard in South Dakota, working as a firefighter for 10 years.
In the early years of retirement, Carl and Jan owned an antique shop in Schuyler called J-Dees Antiques. Carl really enjoyed traveling to different towns in Nebraska for auctions always on the hunt for the best treasure. In 2003, they closed their antique business and moved to Fremont to be closer to family. Carl continued to live in Fremont after the passing of his wife, but eventually moved to Omaha Nebraska in 2023 where he continued to live independently until his recent illness.
Carl is survived by his four children, Jeff (Janice) of Rockford IL, Cynthia (Keith) and Scott (Jenn) of Omaha NE, and Patrick of Muscatine IA, grandchildren Lucas, Brittany, Bryan, Austin and Allison, and numerous relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jan, parents Harold and Alice, parents-in-law John and Anna Streff, brother Arthur Dickey, brother and sister in laws Eldyn, Monica and Yvonne Streff.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, February 2, 2024 at Moser Memorial Chapel at 2170 N. Somers Avenue in Fremont, Nebraska. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Private family burial will be at a later date at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Memorials may be directed to family wishes.
