H. William “Bill” Peters 88 of North Bend passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2024 at his home with his daughter Sarah by his side. He was born June 21, 1935, to Henry and Louise (Lucke) Peters on a farm northwest of North Bend.
He grew up on the farm and attended District 7 country school. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1953. Bill then enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from February 25, 1954, to February 24,1956.
Bill worked for both United and Braniff Airlines in Denver and Washington, D.C. He returned to North Bend and farmed until 1977. He was then employed by Terra International Chemical CO and Husker COOP, retiring in 2011.
Bill married Rita Agnes Gaughen on August 13, 1966, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. He was a member of the Nebraska Air Boat association and the North Bend AM Vets. He was an avid fan of snowmobiling, air boats and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with family at their cabin on the Platte River.
He is survived by his daughter Sarah Peters (Lawayne) Svehla of Elwood; grandson, Sean Kassmeier of San Bernardino, California; granddaughter, Hannah Kassmeier of Lincoln; sister, Maxine Peters Bray of Fremont; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Rita in 2021.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday with a Rosary starting at 7 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Interment and Military honors will be at Woodland Cemetery in North Bend.
