FREMONT, Neb. – On a rainy Saturday night, Midland University hosted rival Morningside University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup at Heedum Field. Despite the weather conditions, the Warriors rallied in the second half to earn the 2-1 win over the Mustangs.
Midland took the lead in the first half as Dana Gomez found the feet of Aminata Lewis who put it to the back of the net in the 20th minute. Shortly after, Morningside brought the game to a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 35th minute.
After the intermission, the Warriors were eager to break the tie as Lewis took the ball past the Mustangs’ defenders and put it past the keeper in the 49th minute. Morningside’s attempt to draw even in the final seconds was denied as Kyla Pires made a stellar save in the closing seconds as Midland held on to win, 2-1.
Pires went the full 90 minutes in goal picking up six saves on the night.
“I am super happy with how the girls played despite the tough weather elements tonight,” commented coach Tatum Tremain. “I can’t wait to see what they do in the next few weeks. We have a lot of potential, and it really showed tonight against a tough Morningside team.”
Midland (8-4-2, 5-2-1 GPAC) will go on the road to Crete, Nebraska to take on Doane (3-6-3, 2-4-2 GPAC) next. The conference matchup will take place on October 18 with the first kick slated for 7:15 p.m. at Al Papik Field.
