SEWARD, Neb. – Midland University took to the road on Wednesday night to take on Concordia University in an important Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) matchup at Bulldog Stadium. The two teams were tied in the conference standings and after a competitive match, they played to a 1-1 tie. Both squads are now 3-0-1 in the GPAC and are in a three-way with the College of Saint Mary with 10 points each.
The Warriors struggled to find their groove offensively in the first half, as they had one lone shot attempt for the full 45 minutes of action. Nearing the end of the first half, the Bulldogs were able to net their goal of the game. The score in the 39th minute led to a 1-0 lead at the break.
After the intermission, Midland was aggressive on the attack as it looked to draw even. In the 48th minute, Ashley Atkinson collected a pass from Rosa Schellmann and put it in the back of the net. The Warriors continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs’ defense but were kept at bay as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
“A point on the road is a fair result,” commented head coach Cody Bartlow. “We didn’t show up in the first half and had to rescue it in the second. The response from the girls was tremendous though to close out the game. I thought we were going to get the three points.”
For the game, the teams finished fairly even on the attack. Concordia had a slight lead in overall shot attempts 10-8, with Midland having the edge on frame at 2-1.
Hannah Tillison played the full 90 minutes in goal. She collected one save on the night for the draw.
“We still have work to do,” added Coach Bartlow. “I’m incredibly proud of the girls’ fight against adversity and overcoming the deficit.”
Midland (6-2-2, 3-0-1 GPAC) will return to home turf to take on the College of Saint Mary (5-1-3, 3-1-1 GPAC). The meeting between two of the top teams in the conference will take place on Saturday, October 1 in Fremont. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start time at Heedum Field.
