Leo J. Spes, 86, of Fremont passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, at Methodist Fremont Health surrounded by loved ones.
Leo was born on Sept. 24, 1936, to Joseph and Catharina (Kudron) Spes in Ewing. He graduated from high school at Ewing. Leo served in the United States Army from Sept. 9, 1955, to Sept. 7, 1957. Following Leo’s time in the service, he worked for Adams Motors in Fremont for a couple years. For the next five years, Leo worked as a dispatcher for the Nebraska State Patrol and the Fremont Police Department. On October 23, 1960, Leo married Janice D. Lund at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. In 1963, Leo became an officer for the Fremont Police Department, retiring as a Captain with 32 years at the department.
Leo was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and served on the church council for several terms. He was also a member of the Police Officer’s Association of Nebraska.
In Leo’s spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and his grandkids.
He was preceded by his parents; wife, Janice; brothers, Ted and Edwin; sisters, Josephine Kosinski, Monica Martin, Rose Rodgers, Leona Sazama, Evelyn Killingsworth, and Sylvia Frey; and son-in-law, Thomas Sawyer.
He is survived by his daughters, Cathy (David) Wetherell and Pamela Sawyer; five grandchildren and 10 ½ great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. Deacon Rick Strong will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.
Burial with military honors will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
