
Last week, Fremont Baseball’s season threw its first pitch and so far they are 2-2 on the year. They began the spring season with a 2-1 loss to the Lincoln North Star. The Tigers would then play in a tournament over the weekend and pick up 2 comfortable victories over the Westview by a score of 12-2 and Crete 11-1. Fremont would end the weekend with a loss to Gretna. The Dragons won a close game 4-3.
In the LNS game, the Tigers had 4 hits and 4 errors compared to just 2 hits and 2 errors for the Gators. Brandt Phillips, Charlie Richmond, Landon Lamson and Ryan Dix all each had 1 hit for Fremont. Phillips pitched 4 innings and had 9 strikeouts while giving up just 2 hits. Dix pitched 2.2 innings in relief and gave up no hits and fanned 3 LNS batters.
Against Omaha Westview, Fremont’s bats came alive scoring 12 runs on 12 hits and just 2 errors. The Wolverines had just 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 errors. Dom Escovedo threw for the Tigers and struck out 4 Westview batters. Richmond, Lamson and Phillips all had 2 hits apiece to lead FHS while Dix, Colin Ridder, Jackson Cyza, Jariel Ortiz-Garcia, Cooper Weitzel and Landon Schurman all had one hit in the 12-2 victory.
In the Crete game, once again the Tigers had a good time hitting the baseball as they had 11 runs on 6 hits and just 1 error. Crete despite producing 5 hits could only turn in 1 run. The Cardinals had 7 errors. Clay Hedges pitched 4 innings for Fremont. Hedges gave up 4 hits but had 6 strikeouts in the win. Logan Eggen would finish it out with 1 inning, giving up 1 hit and fanning 1 Crete batter. Cyza led the way for the Tigers at the plate with 3 hits.
Finally in the Gretna game, FHS had 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 miscue. The Dragons had 4 runs on 9 hits and 3 errors. Escovedo led all Fremont hitters with 2 hits while Hedges, Weitzel, Schurman and Dix all had 1 hit apiece. Ortiz-Garcia and Garrett Rau both pitched 3 innings for Fremont in the loss. Ortiz-Garcia struck out 1 batter while giving up 8 hits. Rau surrendered 1 hit while fanning 3 Gretna batters.
The Tigers this week play on Monday afternoon at 4:30 in Lincoln to face the Lincoln Southwest Silver Hawks. They’ll then head to Sarpy County on Tuesday to meet the Papillion LaVista South Titans for another 4:30 first pitch.
