The former Oakland police chief has been federally charged for misusing public funds.
In 2022, the Nebraska State Auditor issued a report detailing that Terry Poland misused thousands of dollars in public funds to purchase items, including a wakeboard and fishing shelter.
Poland was placed on administrative leave last summer after the audit alleged that he bought more than $14,000 worth of gift cards at Scheels Sporting Goods with city funds.
Poland, who had been the police chief since 2015, claimed to use the cards to purchase ammunition, but instead spent it on personal items including a basketball backboard for his home.
Court records indicate the federal charge is for buying the glass backboard, which cost $950.
Poland tendered his resignation in July. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 14.
