WBB: Red Hot Start for No. 15 Raiders Extends Warriors’ Losing Streak

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Midland University traveled up Orange City, Iowa, on a Saturday afternoon to take on No. 15 Northwestern College in a Great Athletic Plains Conference (GPAC) matchup. The Warriors’ struggles in conference play continued as they fell 84-51 to the Raiders. With the setback, their fifth straight, Midland falls 3-14 overall and 1-10 in the GPAC. Northwestern improves to 14-3 and 8-2 in the conference.

Erin Prusa opened up the game with a layup as the Warriors were the first to score. The quick 2-0 lead would prove to be the only lead of the game as the Raiders responded with a 6-0 run. Sam Shepard brought it back to a one-point game with a three-pointer but a scoring drought of nearly four minutes by Midland allowed Northwestern’s lead to grow to nearly double digits, 14-5.

After a layup by Erin Foxhall ended the run but proved to be the final points of the quarter as Northwestern held a 23-7 lead in their favor after ten minutes.

The second quarter started with a three-pointer from Sam Shepard, as the Warriors were eager to get momentum on their side. The Raiders responded with six straight points but a burst by Midland from behind the arc pulled them within 10. Foxhall, Gabby Beauperthuy, and Lexi Kraft all connected from long range as the Warriors trailed 29-19 with 2:00 left in the half. Midland could only must a pair of free throws down the stretch as Northwestern took a 36-21 lead into the locker room.

After the intermission, the teams traded baskets at the start of the third. Gradually, Northwestern began to pull away on the scoreboard. For the quarter, they made 11 shots from the field while limiting Midland to just 4. The Warriors did get to the free throw line, converting on 7-of-10 in the third quarter.

Heading into the final quarter, the Raiders led 60-37. The Warriors attempted to battle back in the final quarter. Northwestern did not back down and kept a steady pace with 11 more made field goals in the fourth. The Raiders capped off their win with a 6-0 run, making the final tally, 84-51.

For the Warriors, Sam Shepard led the way with 10 points and 7 rebounds. She was followed by Sarah Shepard with seven points. Prusa dished out a career-high seven assists while adding six points.

Midland shot 15-for-53 (28.3%) while Northwestern was 37-for-70 (52.9%). The Raiders got 42 points from their bench and converted 17 Warrior turnovers into 22 points.

Next up for Midland (3-14, 1-11 GPAC) will be a rematch with Mount Marty (5-13, 2-10 GPAC). They’ll be looking for a better outcome after falling to the Lancers, 67-60, earlier in the season. The GPAC matchup will begin at 6:00 p.m. inside the Wikert Event Center on Wednesday, January 18.
