FREMONT, Neb. – After last weekend’s trip up to North Dakota was postponed, Midland University was back in action this weekend at home with a pair of games against Waldorf University. In the battle of teams sharing the same nickname, it was the purple-clad Warriors of Waldorf taking two from the home team. Waldorf came back to win 3-2 on Friday night and edged Midland 2-1 in the finale on Saturday afternoon.

FRIDAY: Waldorf 3, Midland 2

Midland looked well-rested and skated fast in the opening game of the weekend. They moved in unison with each other and that translated to a goal at the 7:31 mark off the stick of Trevor Timm. In the first, MU outshot their opponent 25-6 but could only push one goal past the netminder.

The shot discrepancy carried over into the second with Midland earning 19 shots to Waldorf’s 9. The high number didn’t translate onto the scoreboard as Waldorf tied the game at the 8:11 mark on the power play, and then took the lead just before the halfway mark.

After one more trip to the dressing rooms, Waldorf came out and added to their lead with a goal in the first six minutes. They would hold on to the lead up until the 14th minute when Zach Eddington pulled the hometown Warriors within one. Fletcher Chun and Jared Wisely assisted on the power-play goal at the 13:08 mark.

With time winding down and Midland killing a power play, Waldorf maintained possession of the puck in their attacking zone. By the time the penalty clock expired, there were just 20 seconds left on the clock, prohibiting Midland from finding the equalizer.

Nahuel Veyan collected 26 saves in the loss.

SATURDAY: Waldorf 2, Midland 1

In the final game of the weekend, Midland and Waldorf played nearly 40 minutes without a score. Midland had their chances, outshooting their opposition 23-15 in the first as they went into the intermission scoreless.

The trend continued with every shot being saved by the goalies up until the final two minutes of the second. With their second power-play chance of the afternoon, Kamden Sengheiser found the back of the net off assists from Logan Wotton and Zach Eddington.

In the final minute, Waldorf struck with a goal with 53 seconds on the clock to tie the game up. They would find the gap in the defense once more before the buzzer as they netted what would turn out to be the eventual game-winner with 15 seconds on the second-period clock.

Midland never recovered from the last-minute flurry. Waldorf played soundly in the final 20, burning off two penalties and holding on tightly to the lead.

Nahuel Veyan picked up 33 saves in the loss for Midland. This season he has compiled 194 saves in 413 minutes of action and owns a .851 save percentage.

Midland (2-10) will look to regroup after the Thanksgiving break. They’ll be back on the sheet inside Sidner Ice Arena for a pair of games against No. 7-ranked Jamestown (8-4) to wrap up the first-semester schedule. The Warriors and Jimmies will face off on Friday, December 2, and Saturday, December 3. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m. each night.
