No one was injured during an early-morning fire at the Cambridge Apartment Complex, 2469 Buckingham Road.
Lt. Terry Luthy II said the call came in at about 4:09 a.m.
“While in route, dispatch was getting multiple calls of smoke and water in the building” he said. “Basically the sprinklers were activated and put the fire out as they are designed to do. Then we got information that there were possibly victims trapped in the apartment.”
Luthy said firefighters made their way into the complex and residents were told to evacuate the building immediately. Luthy said a request was made for the Department of Utilities and the State Fire Marshal to arrive on the scene. Gas and power were shut off to the apartments.
When firefighters made their way to the apartment where the blaze started, they noted a couch smoldering with the sprinkler activated.
“The fire alarm was also going off, as it should be,” Luthy said. “The fire alarms and sprinklers did their job and saved us a lot of work.”
The Red Cross was called for displaced residents of the apartment building.
Fremont Fire Command indicated that an electronic device charging cord appears to be the cause of the fire. The State Fire Marshal determined the cause to be accidental in nature.
Luthy said estimated damages are $50,000. Firefighters were on the scene for more than 3 1/2 hours.
