Barnes sentenced to life in prison for murder

A 27-year-old Nebraska man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his fiancé.
Kolton Barnes was sentenced in Saunders County District Court on Monday for first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Kayla Matulka.
Barnes stabbed Matulka 24 times at their home in Malmo in Saunders County in July 2020. In his trial, he claimed self-defense.
According to investigators, Barnes killed Matulka and left her body for her two young children to find. The family’s dog also was killed.
Matulka and Barnes filed for a marriage license just one week prior to the murder.
