Medical marijuana group closes in on target number

News Channel Nebraska
Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana announced this morning that the campaign is on the cusp of securing access to the ballot in the November election with tens of thousands of signatures collected in the last ten days.
“An overwhelming number of Nebraskans have turned out and signed our petitions in the last ten days,” State Senator Anna Wishart said. “As of early Wednesday morning, we are hovering around the raw number of 87,000 required signatures.”
Wishart said organizers of the initiative are seeking an additional 5,000 signatures to ensure they have enough to remain on the ballot.
The drive officially ends Thursday at noon.

“We have 30 hours to get this done,” Crista Eggers, Campaign Manager said. Eggers is the mother of a seven-year-old who suffers from seizures due to epilepsy.
The two petitions include the Patient Protection Act which protects patients with health conditions and their caregivers from arrest for the use of medical cannabis as recommended by a health care provider.
The Medical Cannabis Regulation Act is also part of the petition and it establishes a commission to regulate private businesses that provide medical cannabis to qualified patients.
