MU band, Omaha Symphonic Winds to perform

The Midland University Band and Omaha Symphonic Winds will be performing at 3 p.m. Sunday in Kimmel Theater on the Midland campus. The concert is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased at the Midland University Box Office or online at https://midlandu.booktix.com/. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
The Midland University Concert Band has been preparing a program that will include Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Grainger, Nostalgia by movie soundtrack composer Rossano Galante, Imaginarium by composer Randall Standridge, and Amparito Roca, music in the style of a Spanish bullfight prelude by Jaime Texidor. The 33 students in the Midland band include musicians from a wide range of majors interested in performing band music in a wide range of styles.
The Omaha Symphonic Winds is a select group of talented adult musicians from the Omaha metropolitan area who perform concerts of original band composition and orchestra transcriptions. The OSW program will include Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna an overture by Franz von Suppe, and Like The Stars Forever and Ever by Charles Booker. Amanda Brandon, an OSW member, will be a guest conductor for Opening Night on Broadway which will feature a medley of music from contemporary Broadway musicals such as “The Producers,” “Avenue Q,” “Spamalot,” “Wicked,” and “The Lion King.” Midland students will perform on buckets and other street percussion and join the OSW for TranZendental Danse of Joi by James Bonney, and it will feature Midland guitarist Pablo Arza. Jeremy Murman, band director at Archbishop Bergan High School in Fremont, will be a guest conductor for Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa. The bands will combine to perform a medley of music from Star Wars by famed composer John Williams.
Rex Barker, Director of Instrumental Music at Midland and Music Director for the Omaha Symphonic Winds, will serve as director. He has 40 years of experience as a band director and educator.
“This will be an exciting concert that covers a wide range of literature that the performers and the audience will enjoy,” Barker said. “These musicians are a joy to work with, and I believe it is rewarding for the college musicians to be inspired by the talented adult musicians who continue to make music throughout their entire life. The OSW musicians are encouraged to see the talent and interest of the next generation of musicians that enjoy the experiences that are offered through the band.”
