FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University women’s basketball team avenged an early-season loss as they defeated Mount Marty University 63-52 on Wednesday night. The teams split their season series as the Warriors improve to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The Lancers drop to 2-19 and 1-13 in the conference.
Midland started off hot with a 13-2 run to open the game. Erin Prusa took control scoring nine points in the quarter. With 3:19 left in the quarter, Peyton Wingert connected on a layup to give the Warriors their biggest lead of the quarter at 13.
After scoring the first bucket of the second quarter to cut the lead to seven, Mount Marty was outscored by eight points over the last nine minutes. Midland led 34-19 at the break.
The Lancers came out of the locker room and opened third on a 7-0 run. They remained gritting throughout the half working their way back to as close as seven after a pair of free throws to begin the fourth.
The Warriors responded with Wingert leading the way. She netted 10 of her team-high 21 in the final stanza. She stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds and four assists.
Joining her in double-digits were Erin Prusa (12) and Lexi Kraft (11). Prusa collected her second double-double with 10 rebounds. Coordinating the offense along with Kraft, who had four assists, was Karlee McKinney. The former-Lancer dished five assists and pulled in four rebounds in her first game against her former squad.
Midland 8-12 (4-9 GPAC) will travel to Sioux Center, Iowa this Saturday to face Dordt 15-6 (8-5 GPAC). They’ll tip off inside De Witt Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. on January 22.
