Grand jury called in death of Aaron Schneider

A grand jury has been called by District Judge Geoffrey C. Hall in Dodge County to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Aaron J. Schneider of Fremont.

The Fremont Police Department responded to a report at about 3:25 p.m. May 14 of Schneider threatening to harm himself. Schneider exited a residence on the 200 block of S. Clarmar Avenue with a firearm.

Schneider reportedly fired the weapon at least once to which multiple Fremont police officers responded by discharging their weapons, striking him.

Officers immediately provided medical assistance until Fremont rescue personnel arrived on the scene.

Schneider was later transported to Methodist Fremont Health, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were hurt during the incident.

In Nebraska, a grand jury must be called when an individual has died while being apprehended by or while in the custody of a law enforcement officer or detention personnel. In these cases, the purpose of the grand jury is to investigate the death to determine if formal charges should be made against any person for committing a crime in connection with the death.

By law, the work of the grand jury is conducted in secrecy. Grand jurors take an oath which, in part, requires that they keep secret the work and discussions of the grand jury.

Following the investigation of a grand jury, members will decide if charges should be filed in the case. Their decision will be filed in the office of the clerk of the district court in Dodge County.
