FREMONT, Neb. – After taking the opening game by one goal on Friday night, Midland University’s women’s hockey team shut out the University of Colorado on Saturday (4-0) and Sunday (7-0) to complete the three-game sweep on home ice. The Warriors dominated the Buffaloes in nearly every aspect of the games this weekend to improve to 5-4-1 on the year.
Saturday: Midland 4, Colorado 0
It took a little while for the Warriors’ offense to get going in the second game of the weekend. The teams played to a scoreless draw over the first 20-plus minutes before Kayla Flannigan netted a goal at the 8:46 mark of the second. Madison Miller and Kamryn Hayhurst assisted on what would become the game-winner.
In the third, Miller made her second mark on the score sheet this time with a short-handed goal at the 3:09 mark with Ally Conybear picking up the assist. Three minutes later, Flannigan scored for the second time of the evening after intercepting the Buffaloes in the Warriors’ attacking zone. She made one move around a defender and backhanded the puck past the goalie.
The final goal of the game came with 30 seconds left on the clock. With Midland on the power play, Maxine Mass walked in on the left side of the keeper after a pass from Hayhurst. She went near side, middle of the net for the Warriors’ fourth goal.
Kayla Bailey picked up the win in net. She went the full 60 minutes, stopping 14 shots for the shutout win in her first collegiate start.
Sunday: Midland 7, Colorado 0
Momentum from the final period on Saturday spilled over into the opening 20 minutes on Sunday as the Warriors picked up right where they left off on the ice. Midland scored four goals in the first eight minutes and change.
Kayla Flannigan, Madison Miller, and Maxine Mass all scored in the first six minutes as Midland forced Colorado to make a switch in net. After the swap, Sky Thompson welcomed the new netminder to the game with a goal at the 8:27 mark.
In the second, Midland added three more goals before the halfway mark. Allison Rakowski scored twice with Flannigan getting her second of the game in between. That would prove to be all the scoring for either side as the third period went by with few stoppages.
Andrea Schreiber earned the win in net. She stopped all eight attempts that reached her for the 60-minute shutout.
Midland (5-4-1) will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games at Lindenwood (7-2-1). This will be the first of five trips to the St. Louis area for the Warriors. Puck drop is set for 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, and 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 14 in St. Charles, Missouri.
