Fremont has started the search for a new city administrator.
Current city administrator Brian Newton announced Monday that he will retire after 6 ½ years on the job. He will continue in the role until Jan. 3.
“After serving the public for 42 years, the last 6 ½ years serving the community of Fremont, I look forward to the next stage of my life,” Newton said in a press release. “It has been a pleasure serving the community and I am proud of the work we did to grow the community and make it a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg thanked Newton for his service during an interview with Walnut Media.
“I appreciate Mr. Newton, his service, his dedication and commitment to the City of Fremont over the past 6 ½ years,” he said. “I really do wish him well in his retirement and thank him for all he has done for Fremont.”
The mayor said he is enthusiastic about the city’s future as it begins the search for Newton’s successor.
“I’m very excited about Fremont and where we’re at right now,” he said. “We’re seeing amazing growth and great things are going on. We’ll open up the search nationally. I think Fremont will be a very desirable place for a lot of people because of the exciting things going on here. I’m looking to the future as mayor and ready to see who that next person will be as we start the search.”
Newton was initially hired as interim city administrator in June of 2016. He was appointed city administrator by former Fremont Mayor Scott Getzschman in June of 2017 and approved by the City Council by a 6-1 vote. The lone no-vote was by former councilwoman Susan Jacobus.
