Grill N’ Chill event to honor Campbell’s memory

Dennis Campbell loved cars and the late Fremont man’s friends and family will remember him with a special event this weekend.

The inaugural Dennis Campbell Memorial Grill ‘N Chill car event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Frey’s Detail Shop, 16th & Bell Street.

Dennis died as a result of an auto accident in February. His son Cody said he attended a car show with his dad at Frey’s last year.

“We arranged a little Fremont car cruise and invited a select group of people. We filled the lot last year and it had a really good turnout,” he said. “We decided that we were going to do it again this year and then, with dad passing away in February, we decided to make this a yearly thing now.”

Dennis Campbell was a car body man for about 50 years, including more than 20 at Petersen Body Shop. His passion was working and talking about cars.

“I guess you could say this is the first annual memorial event, but we’re calling it ‘Grill ‘N Chill’ because we’re going to grill hot dogs for people and just kind of hang out,” Cody Campbell said. “It isn’t going to be like the John C. Fremont Days car show where there are trophies and stuff like that. Just bring your hot rods or whatever, have a hot dog  and hang out talking about cars.”

For now, it is an invitation-only event because of limited parking.

“We figured we could get about 50 cars in here so we invited about 50 people,” Cody Campbell said. “It is invite-only, but people can obviously come here, walk around, have a free hot dog, and stuff like that. But as far as the cars are concerned it is just an invite-only thing.”

The event isn’t a fundraiser for anything, but that could change in the future.

“We kicked that around this year,” Campbell said. “If we’re doing it every year we might make it a fundraiser and donate the money to a different cause each year. We’ll just see how it goes tomorrow.”
