Keep Fremont Beautiful is looking to help residents dispose of their household hazardous waste in a responsible manner.
KFB has scheduled a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event for 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Christensen Field in Fremont.
“Household hazardous waste is something that is really important to not let accumulate in your house and to dispose of properly,” KFB Executive Director Casey Vaughan said. “It is any household product that can catch fire, react or explode under certain circumstances or be corrosive or toxic.”
Vaughan said households usually generate about 20 pounds of hazardous waste a year.
“Here in Fremont we have this once-a-year annual event to get rid of that,” she said. “So it is very important to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The executive director said residents can come into the east entrance of Christensen Field. Dodge County REACT will be at the location to direct traffic.
“You can drive around the backside of Christensen Field and you don’t have to necessarily get out of your vehicle,” Vaughan said. “We’ll have volunteers to pull it out and you can drive out the west entrance.”
Through a grant with the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, KFB hires an environmental services company. That group separates hazardous waste into different classes. Depending on what needs to be done, such as incinerating the waste, it is sent off to different places.
Waste materials that will be accepted include: poisons, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based paints, stains, varnishes and outdated or unwanted pharmaceuticals.
