Mayor opens John C. Fremont Days

As a boy, Joey Spellerberg performed with his father, Joe, at John C. Fremont Days. Spellerberg returned to the Chautauqua Tent Stage on Friday as Fremont mayor to officially open the three-day celebration.

“This festival for me always had a special place in my heart,” Spellerberg said. “I performed many times on this very stage with my dad when I was a kid. “I would play the drums and he would play the trumpet. We were quite the duet. I even had props, if you can imagine that.”

Spellerberg said everyone is happy to have JCF Days back after it was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is so good to be back and have this festival again,” he said. “I know we took a little break last year, but we’re back bigger and stronger than ever. This festival would not happen without the amazing support of the volunteers, our board of directors and all of those who put on this great festival.”

Spellerberg also recognized JCF Board President Don Cunningham. He and his wife, Nan, have moved from the city and 2021 marks his final festival.

“I also want to recognize this very special gentleman up here,” he said, motioning to Cunningham. “He probably won’t take my recognition, but Don has been a very critical part of John C. Fremont Days for many, many years.”
