Council looks to affirm emergency declaration

The Fremont City Council will have a special meeting at 6 tonight to focus on the biennial budget.

“It is every two and we’re starting that discussion tonight,” Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg said. “Jody Sanders, our finance director, will go over a rough draft of the 2022-2023 fiscal year and provide a kind of a good macro view of the budget. We’ll look at some capital projects planned and just have an initial discussion there for the first 30 minutes.”

From 6:30 to 7 p.m., members of the public can speak about any item. The regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Among the items on the agenda is a resolution to affirm an emergency declaration that would authorize $1.75 million in repair work for a transmission system that was damaged during last week’s storm.

“We had quite a storm that came through Fremont Thursday morning,” Spellerberg said. “It produced some heavy straight-line winds. I know my power was out for a good portion of the night and a lot of power was knocked out in Fremont. Give our utility department a lot of credit. They went out right away and got power restored as soon as possible.”

Spellerberg noted the damage, including on north Luther Road and U.S. Highway 30, was significant.

“We need to get out and make these improvements right away,” he said. “We can’t wait. We need to get this stuff done so this emergency declaration just allows us to make these repairs as quickly as possible.”

Fremont City Administrator Brian Newton declared an emergency on Thursday to repair the transmission system. The Municipal Code requires that any such declaration be affirmed by the council at its next meeting.
