FHS cheerleaders look to paint city with Tiger pride

The Fremont High School Cheerleading Team is hoping to paint the city with pride this summer.

Head coach Amy Peterson said her squad is conducting a fundraiser where, per the homeowner’s request,  they will spray paint a Tiger Paw on their driveway or yard.

“We actually found out about this from another cheerleading team in Omaha,” Peterson said. “They said they really enjoyed it as a fundraiser. It helps with school spirit and they said it was a fun thing. They felt like it brought the community and the school a lot closer so we thought we’d give it a try.”

The money raised will go toward equipment for the cheerleaders.

“The girls always have to buy their own poms every year,” Peterson said. “But we wanted to get some colored poms because we normally buy these gold ones, but the girls would like to get some that are black and some that are white. That way we can use them for our pep rallies and some of our halftime performances to add some more flair, but they’re not cheap so it is kind of getting to the point where things are becoming so expensive for the girls to purchase and own their own.”

The hope is that the squad can buy them for team members to use.

“It becomes less of a burden on the girls and their families to have to purchase all of this stuff,” Peterson said. “Also things like megaphones and signs because everything has to be customized, which means it is expensive.”

The poms cost about $50 a girl.

“When you put 24 girls on a team you’re spending a pretty penny,” Peterson said.

The poms can also get damaged through the year by just normal wear and tear.

“It would be nice if we, as a team, could just own the poms and then save them in something like Tupperware boxes so the girls didn’t have to purchase them or worry about losing or damaging them,” Peterson said. “It will make it easier on all of them because it is so much easier to store and they don’t lose their shape and don’t get crinkled.”

“They can just pick a day, usually in the mornings or evenings because we wanted to make sure it wasn’t done in the heat of the day,” Peterson said. “They can pick the time because we do want the homeowners or residents at home when we do it so they can choose where they want it and we can collect the money. We want it spray painted to their liking.”

The Tiger paw will be 40 inches wide and 36 inches tall. Supporters can choose if they want the paw to be black or gold with the FHS lettering (on the center of paw) being the opposite color.

Fremonters are known for supporting their prep athletic teams. Peterson hopes that is the case this summer.

“We just want to paint the town with pride,” she said. “I think it would be a fun thing this summer to drive around the neighborhoods and see all of these Tiger paws.”
