A familiar face is returning to the Fremont Public Schools Board of Education.
Terry Sorensen was unanimously approved to fill a vacancy on the board during a special meeting on Wednesday night. The educator at Mission Middle School in Bellevue previously served eight years on the board with his last meeting in January of 2021.
Sorensen talked about his experience during the open interview session Wednesday.
“During my time here we hired a superintendent (Mark Shepard) and we worked really hard to create a balanced budget,” he said. “I spent time on the negotiations committee. Again, looking at the bottom line we were able to meet teachers’ needs and honor their service at the same time.”
Sorensen said prior to the selection that he enjoyed his time on the board and was hopeful he could serve again.
“Mr. Shepard was always fond of saying that we were very lucky to have a board that kept students’ needs in mind 100 percent of the time,” he said. “I was very proud of the time that I served on this board and I would be honored to serve the citizens of Fremont in that capacity again.”
Fellow board member Jon Ludvigsen talked about one of Sorensen’s strengths.
“I think he has demonstrated in the past with everything that he has done that he is a true advocate for kids,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are coming from or what you do, he is just a true advocate for kids.”
Sorensen was one of five candidates interview for the position that was vacated following the death of Dan Moran in April. The other candidates were Betsy Flores, Gary Bolton, Tim Schulz and John Anderson.
Shepard said it was a quality pool of candidates.
“It is amazing that we had these five incredible people that showed interest in this position,” he said. “When we first started talking about it we wondered if we’d get one or two — I think the most we’ve ever had is three. As Sandi (Proskovec) mentioned we’ve had a really challenging year as have all of you, but to have that much interest, especially with all the things we have on the horizon … I’m proud to be the superintendent of Fremont Public Schools and to serve the community and to have this type of support for our school district.”
