Grand jury to convene on inmate’s death

A Grand Jury has been called by District Judge Geoffrey C. Hall in Dodge County to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Ethan C. Knoell on Nov. 17, 2020.

By law, the work of a grand jury is conducted in secrecy. Following the investigation of the grand jury, members will decide if charges should be filed in the office of the clerk of the district court in Dodge County.

Knoell, 26, was found unresponsive in his jail cell and was later pronounced dead at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

He was arrested for domestic assault, resisting arrest, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, child neglect and obstructing justice on Nov. 16, 2020, by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

In Nebraska, a grand jury must be called when an individual has died while being apprehended by or while in the custody of a law enforcement officer or detention personnel. In these cases, the purpose of the grand jury is to investigate the death to determine if formal charges should be made against any person for committing a crime in connection with the death.
