ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Midland University took on Missouri Baptist University on Monday afternoon in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) matchup. The Warriors led for all but the final quarter, but that was the difference as Missouri Baptist came from behind to win 10-7. The loss drops the Warriors to 1-7 on the season and in conference play and brings the Spartans to 6-4 on the season and 6-2 in KCAC play.
Midland wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and building a lead as sophomore Savion Johnson put in two goals in the opening six minutes of the game.
They kept the Spartans off the scoreboard until late in the period when a Spartans shot evaded Warriors goalie Jamison Evers and found the back of the net.
Leading 2 -1, Savion Johnson’s work wasn’t done yet, he scored again this time only 13 seconds into the second period, his second unassisted goal of the contest.
After Spartans’ Jaxon Haas scored his second goal of the game, Midland sophomore Nick Crociata caught fire scoring three consecutive unassisted goals for the Warriors. Crociata’s efforts pushed the Midland advantage to 6-2 with ten minutes to go in the third period.
The Spartans’ attack was persistent as continued to fight back, scoring four straight goals in the ensuing nine minutes, tying the game at 6-6.
With just 27 seconds remaining in the 3rd period, the Warriors regained the lead after a pass from sophomore Joshua Pereira, his second assist of the game, set up sophomore Mitchell Marinaro for a great goal opportunity.
The fourth period was all Missouri Baptist as they tied the game a minute and a half into the period and then scored three goals in the final five minutes putting plenty of distance between their selves and the Warriors.
The Warriors (1-7, 1-7 KCAC) will be back on the field tomorrow, Tuesday, April 13, when they return home to face the Mustangs of Morningside College (0-8, 0-8 KCAC). Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Heedum Field.
