A preliminary plan proposes expanding about 18.5 miles of U.S. 275 from a two-lane highway to a four-lane divided expressway from Scribner to West Point.
The project begins about 2 miles north of the junction of U.S. 275 and Highway 9 (north of West Point) and extends to 3 miles south of the Scribner city limits.
The proposal looks to maximize utilization of existing transportation infrastructure and right-of-way, including connecting three highways — Nebraska 9, 32 and 91. The plan also looks to improve safety and reliability on the roadway.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation plans to construct the majority of this project using a 2+2 approach, which would construct two new lanes with new pavement parallel to the existing lanes that would continue to accommodate traffic. Once construction of the new lanes is complete, all traffic would be shifted to the new lanes while existing lanes would be resurfaced and bridges and other drainage structures would be repaired or replaced. Once resurfacing of the existing lanes is complete, traffic would be shifted to the final four-lane divided expressway configuration.
The project includes a proposed four-lane expressway bypass around Scribner. The bypass would include a new Pebble Creek Levee with the roadway embankment. The existing four-lane concrete section in West Point from approximately 13th Street to approximately Logan Street would be used in place.
Currently, this segment of US-275 is in its final design phase, during which construction plans are developed. Construction will be scheduled as funding becomes available.
