Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – March 23

FREMONT – Wet weather postponed baseball yesterday, and Creighton made school history at the NCAA Basketball tournament. These stories and more, from Rich Ray:

High School Sports

In girls high school soccer last night, Lincoln Pius X defeated Fremont, 3-1 in overtime.  With the loss, Fremont is now 2-1 on the season. The Blair/Waverly girls soccer game in Waverly, and the boys soccer game, at Kranz Field with Waverly last night, was postponed, due to the weather.
High school baseball met with delays again on Monday due to rain. The Bergan vs. Omaha Bryan baseball game at Novak Field in Fremont was postponed last night, due to the weather. The Blair/Omaha Skutt baseball game at Vet’s Field was also postponed.

Midland U

In college tennis yesterday, at the Fremont YMCA, Midland hosted Emporia State.  In men’s action the Hornets defeated Midland 5-2.  In women’s action, Emporia State defeated Midland, 7-0.  The Warrior women are now 2-5 while the men are 6-4.

Creighton Makes History

 A 23-5 run spanning halftime helped the 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded Creighton men’s basketball team make history on Monday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse, as the Bluejays finally earned a trip to the Sweet 16 with a 72-58 victory over 13th-seeded Ohio. The victory secures Creighton’s place in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1974.
With the win, Creighton (22-8) advances to a game next Sunday vs. top-ranked and unbeaten Gonzaga (28-0) at a time and venue in Indianapolis to be determined later tonight. Creighton is 6-4 all-time against the Bulldogs. The Mid-American Conference champions, Ohio finishes its season with a 17-8 record.

UNO

The Omaha men’s golf team is currently tied for 14th at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Missouri State on Monday. The Mavericks shot 305 in the first round and then recorded a team score of 292 in round two, putting them at 597.
