Warriors Complete Season at Collegiate Swimming Championships

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – After seeing the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships canceled for the second consecutive year, Midland University and a handful of other college teams came together to host the 2021 Collegiate Swimming Championship last week in Florida. The event, hosted by Keiser University and Indian River State College, featured teams from eight total teams over four days inside the Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex.
The Warriors saw several outstanding performances in the pool, placing 3rd in the men’s standings and 4th in the women’s.
“I am so thankful that we had an opportunity to compete at a national championship meet,” said head coach Ryan Bubb. “We had some great swims this weekend with seven school records. I think these athletes are well deserving of a nice break. It was a hard and rigorous season and I’m proud of the way the team persevered to a third-place and fourth-place finish.”
Of the seven school records, two came from relays. The women’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Lily Harrell, Kadisyn Kircher, Anna Lowary, and Faith Guyer set the school-record with a time of 8:00.23. They placed fourth in the event.
The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Caleb Miller, Trevor Edwards, Tyler Penney, and Scott Cain put up a time of 1:23.85 in the finals for the school-record. They placed third.
Midland had both of their 400-yard freestyle relay teams place third. The men’s team consisted of Edwards, Penney, Miller, and Cain once again. They had a time of 3:06.45. Lowary, Harrell, Guyer, and Nerissa Wagner formed the women’s freestyle relay team that finished with a time of 3:36.33.
Individually, the Warriors had eight swimmers reach a combined 14 finals and with it top-eight finishes.
Scott Cain reached two finals and had the highest finish by a Warrior. He was 2nd in the men’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.61 and 5th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.15.
Tyler Penney had three finals appearances to lead the men’s team. He was 3rd in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.05), 4th in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.60), and 5th in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.32).
Rounding out the men were Caleb Miller, 8th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:07.92) and 8th in the 100-yard freestyle (46.74), and Carter Hites with an 8th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.89).
On the women’s side, Lily Harrell had three individual finals appearances. She was 6th in the women’s 200-yard backstroke (2:09.61) and 8th in both the 100-yard backstroke (59.91) and 200-yard individual medley (2:12.71).
Three other women rounded out the Warriors’ placings. Faith Guyer was 6th in the women’s 400-yard individual medley (4:44.77), Nerissa Wagner placed 6th in the 100-yard backstroke (59.12), and Anna Lowary was 5th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.49).
