Midland theatre season features ‘going to war’ theme

For the first time, Midland University will present its theatre season with a theme.
The university will produce shows for the 2021-22 season with the theme of “going to war.”
The fall season will open with the Vietnam War drama, “Piece of My Heart.” For two weekends in November, MU will present the stage version of the Irving Berlin classic film, “White Christmas.”
Produced in partnership with the Fremont-Midland Entertainment Series (FMES), the 2022 spring season will open with the musical, “Pippin,” the broadway classic about the son of Charlemagne and his pursuit to find his purpose in life.
In March, the biographical stage play “The Diary of Anne Frank” will take over the theatre stage based on the famous WWII writer.
Later in the spring, the theatre department concludes its portion of the season with the tribal rock musical, “Hair.”
The performing arts department will also offer vocal, instrumental, and dance performances next season.
Director of Performing Arts Anne-Sorensen-Wang said the university has been committed to providing safe performance opportunities for their students and community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have really been forced to be innovative and creative in our goal of providing live performances,” Anne Sorensen-Wang said. “Midland offered socially distant live performances, live-streamed performances, and pre-recorded concerts in our strategy to allow students to perform and provide arts programming to the Fremont and Omaha community. We are proud to be able to bring the arts to our audiences and we will continue to be flexible and creative in this next season.”
In October, the second annual “A Cappella Honor Choir” will feature local high school singers with the Midland University Choir, and A Cappella ensembles, the Clef Dwellers and Freshtones.
Closing the fall semester will be Midland Performing Arts’ annual collaborative concert, “Colors of Christmas,” featuring all university ensembles including band, choir, dance, and a cappella choirs.
Following this, the Midland University Band will perform a joint concert with the Omaha Symphonic Winds.
The nationally renowned Midland University Dance program will feature the 2022 student-choreographed dance ensembles in the annual “Dance Showcase.”
The season concludes with the Spring Music Concert featuring the MU Choir and Band.
Other performances to be featured throughout the season include jazz band concerts, cabarets, a cappella concerts, student recitals, and one-act plays.
Specific dates can be found on www.midlandperformingarts.org. Tickets to all performances can be purchased at www.midlandu.edu/tickets or by calling 402-941-6399.
