Fundraiser set for Bergan youth

Eight-year-old Jace Knoell isn’t lacking any community support as he continues his fight with cancer.

That support includes the Archbishop Bergan Booster Club Executive Board. The club is planning a food take-out fundraiser from 4:45 to 7:15 Tuesday night  at 435 N. Union St. for the Bergan third-grader.

“It is what we do,” said Becky Dahlhauser, an event organizer. “Bergan is truly a family and when one person is hurting or going through something big, you rally together.”

Knoell was diagnosed with Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma in 2013. After 15 months of treatment, he was declared NED — meaning no evidence of the disease. But in April 2020, the cancer returned. Since that time he has undergone treatments to fight the disease.

Dahlhauser said the club brainstormed ideas on how to help the Knoell family that includes Jace’s parents, Jeremy and Jess.

“As a board, we always try to do things like a service project or something like that,” she said. “It came up that maybe we should do a fundraiser for Jace. We put our heads together and remembered our take-out fundraisers during COVID-19 that (featured) favorite lunches for the kids.”

Dahlhauser is friends with Jace’s aunt, Stacey Lichtenberg.

“I asked Stacey if she could find out what Jace’s favorite school lunch is,” Dahlhauser said. “She did and then we took it back to the board and we all agreed it was a good idea to raise money and give back to the family.”

The menu features Jace’s favorite school lunch of two Crispitos, a churro and curly fries for $6. Slushies, including Jace’s favorite (blue raspberry), are available for $3. The club has closed down accepting any more food orders for the event, but will still accept financial donations for the family.

Dahlhauser said many people have helped with the organization of the fundraiser.

“Kim Peitzmeier is the kitchen manager at Bergan and we’ve worked with her on pricing and ordering,” she said. “Carly Gross has been a huge help with designing the flyers and things like that. … It has been a group effort. We try to keep on top of it so it doesn’t get too overwhelming, but no one person could do it, that is for sure.”

Dalhlhauser is hopeful the community will support the event.

“Jeremy is a contractor and out in the community. A lot of people know Jess and their kids,” she said. “This will just take a little bit of the financial burden off so they don’t have to worry so much about things. They can focus on what is important like getting Jace to his treatments and appointments and focusing on their other kids’ athletic activities.”
