Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – March 8

FREMONT – Here’s a look at local sports today, from the desk of Rich Ray:

Girls State Basketball

Fremont GBB loses to L. Pius X 56-52.  Fremont is state runner-up
Bergan GBB beat Hartington CC- 50-41 for 3rd place
North Bend Central repeats the Championship win in Class C1, 51-49 over Hastings St. Cecilia

Midland

Midland University athletes competed in a pair of NAIA Championships over the weekend.  At the Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Yankton, South Dakota, Kylee Edmond tied for eighth in the pole vault.  In men’s action, Shandell Reitzell won the men’s high jump national title at 6-11 and ¾.  Kucera won the shot put title at 59- 11 ¼”.
MU 184 pounds men’s wrestler Tyson Beauperthuy is the National Runner Up, in Park City, Kansas
Also over the weekend:
MU W Lacrosse beat U of Dallas- 15-7
MU W Flag Football beat Xavier- 56-0
MU SB beat Oklahoma Wesleyan- 12-5 and beat Tabor 9-1
MU W Hockey beat Maryville-St. Louis- 7-1 and 3-2
MU M Hockey beat Waldorf 9-1

Creighton

The Creighton women’s basketball team battled second-seeded Marquette to the wire but fell 64-59 in the semifinals of the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, March 7th.

Coming up this week:

Boys state basketball gets underway on Tuesday in Lincoln. Walnut Radio Sports will be following the Blair Bears and Yutan Chieftans as they vie for their districts’ state championships.
Tuesday, March 9th:

  • Blair BBB vs. Norris- Class B Quarterfinals- 9am (Airtime:  8:45am)- Boomer 97.3 FM

Wednesday, March 10th:

  • Yutan BBB vs. Chase County- Class C2 Quarterfinals- 4pm (Airtime:  3:45pm)- KFMT
