Three Rivers Public Health Department said Monday that the first case of the U.K. variant of COVID-19, known at B.1.1.7, has been confirmed in Dodge County.
3RPHD reports genomic sequencing at the Nebraska Public Health Lab uncovered the variant in a child under the age of 10. Contact tracing has already been completed and a thorough review of the case is in process.
Terra Uhing, executive director at the Three Rivers, said officials knew it was only a matter of time before a variant strain was identified within the district. She said the strain is more easily spread, but the current COVID-19 vaccines have shown to be effective.
“It is crucial that everyone continues to do their part by wearing a mask, social distancing and staying home when you are sick as we work to get everyone vaccinated,” Uhing said.
