Sen. Ben Sasse continues to face fallout for his vote to convict former President Donald Trump of inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

In a letter sent Thursday, the Cherry County Republican Party demanded for the senator’s immediate resignation. The political group said it officially voted to censure him after “flagrant disrespect shown to the people of the state of Nebraska and violation of his oath of office.”

Other Nebraska counties, including Sarpy, Hitchcock, Lincoln and Scott Bluff, have also criticized Sasse for dismissing allegations of voter fraud in November’s presidential election.

The Nebraska Republican Party’s Central Committee voted Feb. 27 to rebuke Sasse.
Sasse has refused to repudiate his impeachment vote, warning his party twice in public statements against “the weird worship of one dude.” He said he believes Trump bears some responsibility for the events of Jan. 6 in Washington D.C. because the former president claimed he had won the election.
Sasse was re-elected to his second Senate term in November, winning all 93 counties. He received 80 percent of the vote in Cherry County.
