CRETE, Neb. – Midland University’s cheer team took the mat for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Competitive Cheer Championship on Saturday. The Warriors came away with the top marks as they successfully defended their GPAC title.
Midland won nearly by eight points with an overall team score of 85.41. Hastings would place second (77.56) and Morningside placed third (73.12) Concordia (72.93), Northwestern (72.87), Doane (71.41), and Mount Marty (53.74) to round out the rest of the teams.
“This weekend was nothing but fun,” said head coach Kayla Murray. “On Thursday we had to make some last-minute changes to our routine and the athletes pushed hard to make sure they could execute what they needed to. I felt very confident in them as we went into the GPAC championship and they definitely succeeded tremendously.”
“Our first performance was good but definitely had a lot of potential to be better, so we listen to the judges’ feedback and applied the corrections,” added Coach Murray. “Their finals performance was so much better they brought the energy the judges were looking for. Most importantly they all went out on the floor and have a blast and you could definitely tell. We are excited to finish out the rest of our season over the next two weeks as we gear up for Nationals.”
With the Warriors’ first-place win, they earned an automatic berth to the NAIA National Cheer Championship. The NAIA National Championships will be hosted by St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa on March 12-13, 2021.
