MINOT, N.D — Midland University’s women’s hockey team made a trip to North Dakota to face Minot State University this weekend. The Warriors fought until the final buzzer but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Beavers on Friday night. Saturday’s game was canceled due to illness to the Midland players and staff.
The Beavers took an early lead as they found the back of the net six minutes into the opening period.
Midland would respond with a goal of their own with just over a minute remaining in the first period. While on the power play, Kayla Flanigan found Ally Conybear who sent in a powerful strike past the goalie to even the score at one apiece. After a pair of unsuccessful power-play chances, the Warriors were able to capitalize on the man advantage to tie the game heading into the first intermission.
The second period was very physical. There were five penalties between the two sides and numerous power plays leading to 4 versus 3 play for some time. Although neither side was covert on their power play chances, the Beavers did regain their lead with a goal 1:44 into the period and then extended their advantage with another 32 seconds before the period’s end.
Despite registering 12 shots on goal in the period, The Warriors could not get one past the Beavers’ net-minder.
In the final period, Midland drew within a goal with a score just past the halfway mark of the period. The duo that connected on the first goal did so again although with role reversals. This time Conybear found Flanigan who then fired the puck perfectly past the Beavers’ defense. That score gave the Warriors a jolt of energy as they prepared for the final stretch.
Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in the final minutes, even pulling their goalie for an attacking advantage in the final minute. The tying goal would evade them as they fell 3-2.
Hannah Stone was in goal for the Warriors and finished with 22 saves, playing all but the final 1:09 of the game.
Midland (8-7-0-2) will be back on the ice when they travel to take on McKendree University (1-4-0-0) and Maryville University (0-6-0-0) next weekend.
