Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – February 24

FREMONT – Here’s a look at local sports today with Rich Ray:

Basketball

The Fremont High girls basketball team began post-season play last night, by hosting Elkhorn South in the A-5 District Tournament semifinals at Al Bahe Gymnasium.  Fremont defeated the Storm 79-54.  The Tigers drained 15 three-pointers on the night and were led by Taylor McCabe with 25 points.  Charli Earth added 14 and Macy Bryant scored 12.  The Storm were led by Rylee Gray with 13 points and Lauren Kohl with 10.  Elkhorn South ends the year 7-15.
Fremont is 20-3 and will host Papillion LaVista in the District Championship game, tomorrow night.
The Archbishop Bergan boys basketball team began the post-season last night in the C2-2 Sub-District Semifinals at Yutan, versus Palmyra. Bergan was defeated 61-45.  Chris Walz tells us more:

The Blair High boys basketball team played at Bennington versus the Badgers in the B-5 Sub-District championship, last night. After Bennington lead the game for the majority of play, Blair roared back in the 4th quarter, just capturing the win 54-53. With more, here’s Chris Whitney:

 
The Fremont High boys basketball team will host an opening round matchup in the A-1 District Tournament.  The Tigers are the #4 seed and will play #5 seed Columbus, Friday night at 6:30pm at Al Bahe Gymnasium.

Track & Field

Qualifiers have been announced for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 3-6th in Yankton, South Dakota.  Midland will send seven athletes, four women and three men.  For the women, Kylee Edmonds will compete in the pole vault while Madilynn Edwards, Myia Johnson and Vivian Sanchez will all compete in the 1 mile run.  Sanchez will also compete in the 800 meter run.
For the Midland, Jose Gonzalez will compete in the 1000 meter run. Dylan Kucera will compete in the shot put and the weight throw, while Shandon Reitzell will compete in the high jump.

Nebraska women’s basketball travels to Minneapolis on Wednesday. Tip-off between the Huskers (11-9, 9-8 Big Ten) and the Golden Gophers (7-11, 6-10 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at Williams Arena.
No. 13 Creighton (16-5, 12-4 BIG EAST) hosts DePaul (4-10, 2-10 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, February 24.  Tip-off on First National Bank Court at CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb., is set for 8 p.m.
