BOX SCORE
FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University took the court Wednesday night for their last home game of the season, facing Doane University inside Wikert Event Center. The Warriors’ strong three-point shooting led them to a narrow victory over the Tigers, 75-71.
Midland found their offensive rhythm early. In the first half, they shot 15-of-30 from the field and were 10-of-17 from three-point range. The offensive attack was spearheaded by Bo Sandquist and Arturo Montes, who combined to go 8-of-13 from long range and each had 12 points.
The Warriors ended the half with eight of their final nine made field goals being from behind the arc. The hot shooting powered them to a 42-34 advantage at the break.
To begin the second half, Doane connected on six of their first seven shot attempts as they went on a 14-2 run to earn them their first lead of the game, 48-44 with 15:41 remaining. Midland immediately responded, with a resounding 14-0 run of their own that not only regained the lead back but staked them to a 58-48 with 11:08 to go.
While their shooting cooled off, the Warriors remained aggressive in attacking the paint and earning free throw opportunities. They made good on those attempts, going 11-of -12 from the stripe in the half.
The two teams would trade baskets for a while until an 8-2 Doane run, which was capped by a Tiger dunk, cut the Warriors’ lead to just three with 21 seconds to go.
A pair of free throws by Sandquist and then two more from Colby Tichota kept the Tigers at bay as the Warriors secured the 75-71 victory.
Emanuel Bryson stepped up for Midland in the second period. He did a little bit of everything as he scored eight points, pulled down four rebounds, and dished out two assists. He finished the game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 dimes.
Four other Warriors reached double figures as Sandquist led the team with 22 points. Jake Rueschhoff scored 12 points, Tichota scored 11 points, and Montes had 15 points off the bench.
Midland (5-16, 3-15 GPAC) will be back on the court this coming Sunday, as they travel to take on Dakota Wesleyan (16-7, 12-6 GPAC) in a make-up game from December. The Warriors will be looking to complete the season sweep of the Tigers on February 14 in Mitchell, South Dakota. Midland won the first meeting 84-75 earlier this year. The game is set for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at the World’s Only Corn Palace.
