YORK, Neb. – Midland University’s men’s wrestling team opened their season on Saturday with seven wrestlers competing in the York Open. The one day, individual open was attended by Concordia University, Grand View University, Hastings College, Midland, Wayland Baptist University, and host York College.
The Warriors had a great showing as Eddie Daniel and Tyson Beauperthuy each reached their division’s championship bout. Daniel was the runner-up at 125, going 4-1 on the day with a win by tech fall, fall, and two by decision. Beauperthuy was unbeaten with a major decision, decision, and three wins by fall at 184.
At 149 Steven Aranda when 2-3, placing 10th in the weight division. After losing his first three bouts, he finished strong with a win by fall and a win by tech fall.
Raymond Aranda was 4th in the 157 division. He went 3-2 on the day with two wins by fall, one by a tech fall. He nearly won his final bout in overtime, falling 6-4.
Antonio Rinn won his first bout at 165 before suffering three pins. He was 1-3 on the day, placing 6th.
Also at 165, Chase Engelhardt went 4-1 with his lone loss coming in the semifinals. He placed 3rd with a pair of tech fall wins, a win by fall, and a win by injury default in the third-place bout.
Connor Rinn had a pair of wins, one by fall and one by decision, as he went 2-3 at 285. He placed 4th, going 2-3 overall.
“I was super happy with the competitive spirit and the results from our guys,” commented head coach Larry Nugent. “We have a mix of seasoned and talented veterans and also a strong group of first-year guys. So far they have generated a nice team synergy.”
Midland will look to get healthy over the next few weeks as they prepare for a conference dual with Hastings College on November 24. The Tuesday night GPAC dual will be in Hastings, Nebraska with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
