Glass Recycling In Fremont Making Waves – 45,320lbs Recycled

FREMONT – In June of 2019, the City of Fremont opened a free bunker site at the old tree dump on South Broad Street for glass recycling.
Every Saturday morning from 8 am-noon, the city has opened up the site for anyone to drop off any colored glass food and beverage containers as well as plate glass.
For roughly one year and four months, glass has been accumulating at the bunker until it was ready to be taken to the processing center. Last week, Ron Gaeth, with the Street Department loaded a truck full of the glass and headed to Ripple Glass in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ripple Glass recycles amber glass to make new glass bottles and all other glass is turned into fiberglass insulation. According to Ripple, a 6-pack of recycled bottles produces enough fiberglass insulation to fill a standard wall cavity.

Ripple Glass verified that the total weight of the glass collected by the City of Fremont was 45,320lbs.
“We are so thankful that the City of Fremont has been so willing to provide this service to residents in the area. Anything we can do to keep recyclable products out of our landfills is a win,” said Casey Vaughan, Executive Director at Keep Fremont Beautiful.”

Did You Know?

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly. Burying glass in the landfill wastes the material, energy, and labor that went into making it. Using recycled glass produces 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than creating new glass or fiberglass from raw materials.
Every ton of glass that is recycled results in more than one ton of raw material saved. That’s equal to
  • 1,300lbs of sand
  • 410lbs of soda ash
  • 380lbs of limestone
  • 150lbs of feldspar.
