FREMONT – Here’s your daily look at local sports with Rich Ray:
The Girls State High School Golf Championships began yesterday. Class A is at the Norfolk Country Club. North Platte is in first place with a 324. Lincoln Pius X is second at 337. Nicole Kolbas of Lincoln Pius X is the leader after a 1-under 71. Fremont’s Allysa Walters is 56th after a 98.
In Class B, at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering, Scottsbluff is first with a 354. Omaha Duchesne Academy is second at 375. Blair is ninth at 45. Julia Karmazin of Elkhorn North is the leader after a 5-over 77. Anna Moore of Blair is tied for 17th after a 99.
In Class C, at Elks Country Club in Columbus, Broken Bow is first at 369. Lincoln Christian is second at 386. Abbigail Broderson of Boone Central and Lynzi Becker of Cozad are tied for first after 5-over 77’s. Final round action at all three sites is slated for today.
Turning to collegiate golf, the Omaha men’s golf team and the Midland Warriors are tied for fourth place after the first round of its own Maverick Invitational at The Creek after play on Monday.
The 54-hole tournament featured 27 holes on day one, leaving play suspended following the first nine holes of round one. The Warriors were led by Preston Carbaugh and Jordan Greenwood, who are tied for tenth with 75’s.
The second round will conclude when play resumes at The Club at Indian Creek on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The third round will follow immediately thereafter.
