Proper Disposal of Latex-Based Paint at Home
Latex-based paint may be safely disposed of at your home. Proper disposal of latex paint requires that the paint is completely dried out or hardened before placing in the trash.
Drying out latex-based paint for proper disposal:
Use kitty litter or vermiculite to mix with the unusable paint. Then, pour the mixture into a plastic-lined box to dry. Empty paint cans may go in the trash; just be sure to remove the lids so your refuse hauler is able to see the can is empty and dry.
Hardening latex-based paint for proper disposal:
Use a commercial hardener, which can be found at most hardware stores. This is a solution you add to the paint so it becomes hardened and may be safely disposed of curbside. Remove paint can lids prior to placing them in the trash.
