Senator Walz Addresses False Campaign Attacks

DODGE COUNTY – Today, Senator Lynne Walz of Fremont addressed the advertisements that have been sent to voters in Legislative District 15, which includes all of Dodge County. Over the last few weeks, campaign fliers and radio ads have attacked Sen. Walz’s record on a number of issues.
“These advertisements have been lies about my time as the State Senator for Dodge County,” Walz said. “I have always been honest about my pro-life views, which were proven in my support for bills like LB814 and LB209.” Those bills would ban dismemberment abortion and mandate information to be provided on the abortion pill reversal process.
The attacks claim she voted for public-funded abortions, which is grossly misleading. The flyers cite LB327, the state’s main budget bill that included Title X funds, which provides women’s healthcare to low-income people. “At the time of that vote, federal regulations contradicted the language in that bill. It would have jeopardized funding for Three Rivers Health Department based in Fremont, which does not provide abortion services. My vote was for women in my district,” Walz said. “There is no proof that these funds have ever been used to fund abortions. If there was, I would stop it.”
Another attack says she supported early release for violent criminals. The attack cites LB1004, a bipartisan bill that had the support of the Omaha Police Officers Association and prosecutors from around the state. The Omaha World-Herald did an editorial on September 18th, clarifying the intent of that legislation. They conclude that editorial, “it’s outrageous that at least one lawmaker who voted for the proposal, Sen. Lynne Walz, is being vilified in hostile campaign flyers as a supposed coddler of criminals. The flyers fail to tell voters that Nebraska’s criminal prosecutors and the Omaha police union supported the proposal. It was a soundly crafted step, they said, to strengthen rehabilitation and reduce the recidivism rate.”
“These attacks are meant to divide us rather than unite us. I’m proud of my nonpartisan record of fighting for my constituents. I’ll continue to push for strong schools, good-paying jobs, safe neighborhoods, and property tax relief for our families. I am pro-life and proudly endorsed by the  Nebraska Fraternal Order of Police and the Nebraska Professional Firefighters Association,” said Walz. “I believe voters will see these are misleading claims coming out of Omaha and Lincoln trying to influence our election. I’ll continue to promote our positive vision to make Dodge County and Nebraska the best place to live.”
