Sodbusters Take 2nd Win in Series Against Moo

FREMONT – Hastings pitching worked out of numerous jams, stranding 13 Fremont baserunners in a 5-2 win for the Sodbusters, giving Hastings its second win in a three-game series between the top two teams in the Clark Division.
Listen to the game recap:

Fremont got on the board in the bottom of the third, as Jaxson Simmerman lofted the first pitch of the inning over the 27-foot high fence down the left-field line for his first home run of the season. But the Moo left the bases loaded that inning, then stranded two in the fourth and three more in the fifth as Hastings starter Jeremy Schneider found his way out of three separate jams. Then in the bottom of the ninth, the Moo loaded the bases with two out, but could only score one before falling.

Hastings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Grant Schmidt lined a homer to left to lead off the inning. Two batters later, John McDonald lofted a home run to left to double the Sodbusters lead to two. In the third, Hastings extended its lead. Casey Burnham led off the inning with a single to right. Two batters later, Tayten Tredeway singled to right, moving Burnham to second. A walk to Griffin Everitt loaded the bases and a Schmidt single to right scored two runs. Reece Anderson singled the next pitch into left field, scoring Everitt to push the Sodbusters’ lead to 5-0, before Simmerman’s home run in the bottom of the third put the Moo on the board.
James Scurto stabilized for the Moo in the fourth, allowing just three more baserunners. From there, Ben Simonsen allowed just one baserunner in two no-hit innings of relief, then Grant Hubka retired all six he faced with five strikeouts. Offensively, Kanin Dodge was 2-for-3 with a walk to pace the Fremont lineup.
The Moo and Sodbusters will close their three-game series in Fremont tonight at 7:05 pm at historic Moller Field (750 S. Broad Street). The teams will then head to Hastings for a three-game series at Duncan Field starting Friday.
