FREMONT- As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, schools and families are finding ways to spread positivity and light in the community. On Saturday, April 19th, Archbishop Bergan teachers and families held a drive-thru parade.
“We were all missing our students so much. We wanted to be able to get a sense of closure as well as put a smile on our students’ faces. The last quarter of the school year is such a special time for teachers and students and it tugs at our heartstrings that we’re missing out on those lasts. This was a way for us and our students to fill up our tanks and finish the year strong,” said 2nd Grade Teacher Kris Janke.
Over 120 cars participated in the parade as teachers stood outside of the Bergan Elementary School waving to students as they drove by. Each teacher maintained social distancing protocols, and families were not allowed to get out of their cars.
Many teachers held up signs and cheered as families drove through, and students cheered for their favorite teachers and created colorful signs to give teachers that extra motivational boost.
“This event has really helped me get the closure I needed during my first year teaching at Bergan. We’ve all become such a close family and I was definitely sad that I lost those lasts with my students. We’re all very supportive of each other and Bergan is great at finding ways to make it through tough times,” said Kindergarten Teacher Abby Coday.
Janke said they are looking for more opportunities in May to celebrate the end of the school year and send the seniors off right. “We want to make sure that the support never ends and that these families and students know that we’re with them every step of the way,” said Janke.
